Grains

 Benefits:     An excellent source of starchy carbohydrate and dietary fiber.     A good source of niacin, riboflavin, other B vitamins and iron.     More economical than meat, fish and other diet staples. Drawbacks:     An incomplete source of protein.     Gluten in some grain products provokes malabsorption symptoms in people who have celiac disease.

Garlic

 Benefits:     May help lower high blood pressure and elevated blood cholesterol.     May prevent or fight certain cancers.     Antiviral and antibacterial properties help prevent of fight infection.     May alleviate nasal congestion. Drawbacks:     Causes bad breath.     Can cause indigestion, especially if eaten raw.     Direct contact irritates the skin and mucous membranes.

Guava Fruit

 Benefits:     An excellent source of vitamin C.     High in pectin and other types of soluble dietary fiber.     Good amounts of potassium and iron. Drawbacks:     Fresh fruit is expensive and not widely available.     Sulfites in dried guavas may provoke an asthma attack or allergic reaction in susceptible persons.  Benefits:     High in pectin and bioflavonoids.     Contain phytochemicals that may reduce risk for heart disease, cancer and stokes.     A fair source of iron and potassium.     A low-calorie sweet snack and dessert. Drawbacks:     Since they are often treated with sulfur dioxide to retard spoiling, grapes may present a problem for sulfite-sensitive people.     Natural salicylates may provoke an allergic response.

Drawbacks:     Their tartness is usually offset with large amounts of added sugar.     Gooseberry bushes harbor a fungus that kills some types of pine trees.
